Quality E-Assist motors such as Bosch, Shimano, and EBO work wonderfully with recumbent trikes. It becomes a great addition if you are having problems climbing hills, recovering from injury, rehabbing from surgery, or lagging behind the group. There is, however, a huge difference in motors available, and we can help you understand the difference in quality and performance.
The best "deal" is the motor that delivers many years of smooth, quiet power to assist your riding enjoyment. A motor that does this is not the cheapest motor, but it is the best "deal" because it supplies the best value.
We stock Bosch motor kits and also sell and service manufacturer-installed e-assist motors.

The gold standard. Smart torque sensing makes the assist feel like stronger legs, not a motor pushing you along. We stock Bosch motor kits and service factory-installed Bosch systems.

Quiet, efficient, and integrated beautifully with Shimano shifting. A favorite for long touring days.

The flexible, value-focused option. Add a throttle, retrofit existing trikes, customize to your needs.
Pedal-assist (PAS) systems multiply your pedaling effort — the harder you push, the more help you get. Throttle systems give power on demand whether you're pedaling or not.
Most riders end up loving pedal-assist. But for riders with knee issues, balance concerns, or who want effortless cruising, throttle systems are the right call. We'll be honest about which fits you.
Mid-drive motors (Bosch, Shimano) live near the bottom bracket and drive the chain. They use your trike's gears, climb beautifully, and feel natural. They cost more.
Hub motors (EBO and others) live in a wheel hub. Simpler, less expensive, and easy to retrofit on existing trikes. Often the right answer for adding assist to a trike you already love.
Manufacturer range claims are usually measured on flat ground in eco mode. Real Alabama riding — with hills, headwinds, and the assist mode you'll actually use — typically lands at 60–75% of the claim. We'll size the battery for the rides you actually want to take, not the rides on the brochure.
"We've talked plenty of customers out of e-assist when they didn't need it. That's the job."
Every e-assist system feels different. Come ride a Bosch trike on the Ladiga and you'll know within a mile whether assist is for you.
